GREEN VARNISH RESCUE Innovative acetal-based solvent blend for the removal of medium-polarity varnishes from cultural heritage surfaces
What it is Green Varnish Rescue is an innovative acetal-based solvent blend designed for the effective and environmentally responsible removal of medium-polarity varnishes — including Paraloid B72, unaged dammar, retouching varnishes, and PVA — from historic and artistic artefacts.
Why it matters Removing medium-polarity coatings typically requires volatile solvents that expose operators to harmful vapours and fire risks. Green Varnish Rescue takes a different approach: its low volatility (complete evaporation in approximately 30 minutes at 20–25 °C) drastically reduces VOC exposure while giving conservators greater control over the cleaning process. No neutralisation of the treated surface is required.
Key features
- Effective on Paraloid B72, unaged dammar, retouching varnishes, and PVA
- Low volatility — evaporates in ~30 minutes at room temperature (20–25 °C)
- Significantly reduced VOC emissions compared to conventional solvents
- No neutralisation required after treatment
- Compatible with gel support systems (tested with Klucel G)
- LD50 (rat, oral): 4,300 mg/kg — favourable toxicological profile
- Validated by YoCoCu APS
How to use Green Varnish Rescue can be applied by cotton swab or with gel/poultice support systems (tested: Klucel G). Gel application with Japanese tissue interleaving is recommended to reduce solvent penetration into porous substrates, simplify application on vertical surfaces, and control contact times. When using gel application, remove the gel residue with a solvent capable of dissolving the gel phase. The treated surface does not require neutralisation.
Due to its low volatility, this product requires a different approach compared to fast-evaporating solvents commonly used in conservation. Lightly dampen the swab rather than soaking it, and use only a portion of the swab to apply the solvent. This prevents unnecessary over-saturation of both the coating to be removed and the underlying substrate, allowing better control of the cleaning action.
Evaporation time decreases at higher temperatures. Always perform a preliminary test on an inconspicuous area to evaluate specific risk factors before full-scale application.
Applications
- Removal of Paraloid B72 coatings from stone, plaster, and painted surfaces
- Removal of unaged dammar varnish from easel paintings
- Removal of retouching varnishes
- Removal of PVA-based coatings and adhesive residues
